OVHA is developing a fibre-optic broadband network alongside its Cardenden Heat and Power project in an effort to provide 10 megabit speeds and cutting edge services to local residents (with the capacity to significantly upgrade this at a later stage). In addition, internet telephony and other network-based services will be available and the intention is to offer these services at prices lower than the current market offerings available to Cardenden residents. The above video is from a presentation made in March 2010 to the Technology Strategy Board, illustrating the aims of the project. The talk is delivered by Mark Trojacek of Fibre Options Ltd. who were the lead consultants on the feasibility study, funded through the TSB's Digital Britain programme. The project's feasibility has been assessed and is now planned for integration with the CHAP project in the coming months. By doing so, it would capitalise on the groundworks that would be undertaken as part of the heat network installation, thereby significantly lowering the installation costs of the fibre-optic cabling that would underpin the network. The CHAP Broadband service featured in an Ofcom investigation in to future fibre-optic network developments investigating how high-speed internet services will be provided.
